Our Top 5 Ways to Beat the Winter Blues

Winter did not delay this year with her very prompt appearance on June 1. For many, this time of year can bring on the winter blues, a condition also known as SAD (seasonal affective disorder). This could be brought on by shorter days, less sunlight and lower temperatures, but no matter what's got you feeling down there are simple things you can do to help boost your spirit and mood. I've put together my very own TOP 5 list of ways to feel happier.

1. TURN ON THE TUNES!
In a 2013 study researchers showed that listening to upbeat or lively music significantly improved the participant's mood. Find your favourite tunes and make a powerful playlist that'll kick any Debbie Downer thoughts to the curb!

2. DANCE YOUR CARES AWAY! (This is obviously one of my favourites)
Dancing triggers the release of 'feel good hormones' known as endorphins in the brain. Endorphins also trigger a positive feeling in the body. That post workout feeling, often described as "euphoric", can be accompanied by a positive and energising outlook on life.

3. SPEND QUALITY TIME WITH A FRIEND
While alone time is important for creativity and inspiration, spending quality time with friends and family is just as important. Research shows that spending time with friends and family makes a big difference when it comes to happiness. Social time is especially important for happiness – even for introverts. Studies have proven that the amount of time spent with friends and family goes a long way towards boosting happiness – even more than an increased income!

4. GET OUTSIDE
Spending time outside (even when it’s chilly!) can improve focus, reduce symptoms of SAD, and lower stress levels. Grab your power playlist, plug in your headphones, go for a walk and take in nature's beauty. Long walks are an amazing way to allow the mind and body to relax and reset.

5. LAUGHTER
Laughter really is the best medicine. A good, hearty laugh relieves physical tension and stress, leaving your muscles relaxed for up to 45 minutes after. It draws people together in ways that trigger healthy physical and emotional changes in the body. Laughter strengthens your immune system, boosts mood, diminishes pain, and protects you from the damaging effects of stress. Treat yourself to a funny podcast, comedy show or movie and when you hear laughter, move toward it! To get you started, watch this super silly pole blooper that happened during one of my training sessions with Shea.

I hope you find my top 5 happiness tips above useful and if you have any tips to share, I'd love to hear what's working for you. Just reply this email and let me know.

Let's make this our happiest winter yet!

With love
