Mike

What made you start pole dance classes?
A friend of mine invited me to Showcase back in February last year and needless to say, I've been hooked ever since. Watching the performers having fun on stage and looking so energized completely changed my perspective of pole dancing. I signed up on the spot and haven't looked back since.

What motivates you to keep coming to classes at Pole Athletica?
The classes are structured really well to allow for steady progression, and there is never a shortage of new moves and combos to learn.  There's always something to keep you interested and coming back for more. Plus, the instructors have a habit of making the classes look so fun and easy....

What changes have you noticed in your life since you started pole dancing?
Definitely a boost in confidence. I remember keeping pole dancing a secret when I first started just because I was worried about being laughed at, but now if anyone asked how my day was, I'd respond with "Great, I just did a pole workout!" Also, I'm no longer as clumsy....although still very bruised.

How does pole dancing make you feel about yourself?
I have actually never felt better or fitter. The confidence boost is great! I'd watch my instructors demonstrate a move and think there's no way I'd be able to pull that off, but then actually nailing it gives me such a rush!

What changes have family and friends noticed in you/your appearance since you started pole?
They have definitely noticed a change in my self-esteem and fitness level, as I have come out of my shell more since I started doing pole. Comments from friends and family range from " Wow, you look great!" to "You used to be such a quiet boy."

What is your next goal for pole?
I'd love to improve my movement flow, which comes down to my flexibility and coordination. My transitions still tend to be a bit awkward. Then, perhaps performing at Open Night?

How long can you see yourself pole dancing for?
No plans to stop anytime soon. To me, pole class is no different than working out at a gym. You don't really stop just because you've reached your goal weight or achieved the summer body. You continue on and improve while learning new things all the time.

What is your favourite thing about Pole Athletica?
What's not to like? The staff are a great and attentive bunch who make everyone feel welcome the moment they walk through the doors, the instructors keep the classes fun and challenging, and Tinky, the studio mascot, struts around looking for cuddles. Plus, the students all encourage and support one another and cheer whenever anyone nails a new move!

What are your favourite things about pole dancing?
That it is a great work out that incorporates strength, coordination and flexibility and above all fun. There are always new moves to learn and I still get a rush each time I pull off a move.

What is the most challenging thing about pole dancing?
As one instructor eloquently puts it, the burn of a thousand suns!!! The amount of bruises I have accumulated in my time doing pole is immeasurable, but I have learnt to treat them as my battle scars.

Who do you think would benefit from pole dancing?
Anyone, really. To those who have a stigma against pole dancers, don't mock it until you've tried it. It has definitely changed my mind. To those who feel they are not suited for it, practice makes perfect; Rome wasn't built in a day. Above all, anyone who wants to keep fit, look great, feel good about themselves and have fun along the way!
